SlingCatcher is a universal media player which links the computer to the TV. It plugs into the back of your TV to display films, video clips and pictures which are stored on the computer or streamed via the internet to your PC or laptop. When coupled with Sling Media’s SlingBox (which was designed to transmit programmes from the TV set top box to the computer) it can also be used to transmit video material between TV sets in different rooms or even to watch via broadband from the other side of the world.
To enable the SlingCatcher TV display SlingProjector software is downloaded (free) from Sling Media. This is designed to work with Windows XP or Vista. It is not yet available for Macintosh, nor will it transmit HD-DVD or Blu-ray video.
SlingCatcher connection to the TV is via composite, S-Video, component or HDMI cable. (Composite and audio cables are provided; other cables must be bought separately). The SlingCatcher should be connected with the WiFi network router through the Ethernet cable provided. If the TV is in a different room from the PC, you can use your home electrical circuit using a pair of SlingLink Turbo boxes or similar device, plugged into electrical points in each room.
The remote control is used to set up and manage the system. It cannot be used to control the computer, but allows you to select the frame which you want to see on the TV (for example the iPlayer programme you wish to watch).
A USB slot in the SlingCatcher also allows you to connect a portable hard drive or memory device for watching content on the TV.
The SlingBox on its own provides a link between your TV set top box and the computer, Blackberry, Palm, Symbian or Windows Mobile device. This allows the user to control the set top box and watch a programme in another room, another location or another country.
